Biden Was A Steady Voice
-Hello everyone and a good Friday morning to each of you. Thanks for stopping by today – we’re always glad to have you join us.
-Out in the back yard we have a cool … no, let’s change that to a cold freezing 32 degrees, right on the money.
Skies are clear and when I stuck my head out the back door of our home – it was snappy and cold out there.
Today’s northland weather forecast is: Mostly sunny. Highs 48 to 53. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.
Quote for the day:
As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: you liberate a city by destroying it. Words are to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interests. ~ Gore Vidal
-I’ve been wearing shorts of one kind or another since the day I walked out of my office on June 13, 2008 and gosh do I hate the thought of having to put jeans or slacks back on. I’ve loved my legs bare and tan and the thought of material rubbing up against them, along with heavier shirts – just makes my skin crawl.
I could have been a nudist – just ask my partner Steve.
-October is GLBT history month, and on this date:
October 3
October 3, 1847 – Hans Christian Andersen wrote to the Hereditary Grand-duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, “I love you as a man can only love the noblest and best. This time I felt that you were still more ardent, more affectionate to me. Every little trait is preserved in my heart.”
October 3, 1970 – Bisexual singer Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose.
October 3, 1980 – US Representative Robert Bauman (R-MD) was arrested in Washington DC for soliciting sex from a male prostitute. Bauman was a supporter of the Moral Majority and a founding member of the American Conservative Union.
October 3, 1992 – At the fourth annual Asian Lesbian and Gay Regional Conference in Manila, delegates voted to create the Global Alliance Lesbian and Gay Asia to promote solidarity among Asian sexual minorities.
October 3, 1997 – Paul Bradford Cain, a 26 year-old champion kickboxer, was sentenced to 25 years to life for the murder of gay scientist Dr Stanley Keith Runcorn. In a statement before his sentencing, Cain claimed he was the true victim because Runcorn made a pass at him. The judge disagreed, saying to Cain “I hope you rot in hell because what you did was callous and cruel.”
October 3, 1997 – An Ontario court ruled that the province’s Insurance Act had to include same-sex couples in the definition of spouse.
October 3, 1997 – Gay historian and Shakespeare scholar A. L. Rowse died at age 93 in southwest England. He had suffered a stroke the year before.
-Did you watch any of the Biden – Palin debates last evening? Sen. Joe Biden made a strong statement for gay relationship equality during the only vice presidential debate, held Thursday evening in St. Louis.
When asked by moderator Gewn Ifill, “Do you support, as they do in Alaska, granting same-sex benefits to couples?”
Biden replied,
“Absolutely. . . . Look, in an Obama-Biden administration, there will be absolutely no distinction from a constitutional standpoint or a legal standpoint between a same-sex and a heterosexual couple.”
He added:
“The fact of the matter is that under the Constitution we should be granted – same-sex couples should be able to have visitation rights in the hospitals, joint ownership of property, life insurance policies, et cetera. That’s only fair. It’s what the Constitution calls for. And so we do support it.”
“We do support making sure that committed couples in a same-sex marriage are guaranteed the same constitutional benefits as it relates to their property rights, their rights of visitation, their rights to insurance, their rights of ownership as heterosexual couples do,” he added.
But when the question was put to Republican Sarah Palin, the Alaska governor skated around the question.
“Well, not if it goes closer and closer towards redefining the traditional definition of marriage between one man and one woman. And unfortunately that’s sometimes where those steps lead,” Palin said.
“But I also want to clarify, if there’s any kind of suggestion at all from my answer that I would be anything but tolerant of adults in America choosing their partners, choosing relationships that they deem best for themselves, you know, I am tolerant and I have a very diverse family and group of friends and even within that group you would see some who may not agree with me on this issue, some very dear friends who don’t agree with me on this issue.
“But in that tolerance also, no one would ever propose, not in a McCain-Palin administration, to do anything to prohibit, say, visitations in a hospital or contracts being signed, negotiated between parties.
“But I will tell Americans straight up that I don’t support defining marriage as anything but between one man and one woman, and I think through nuances we can go round and round about what that actually means.
“But I’m being as straight up with Americans as I can in my non- support for anything but a traditional definition of marriage.”
Palin has previously stated that she believes that homosexuality is a choice.
When Biden was asked about gay marriage he said he was opposed, as is Sen. Obama.
I think Obama and Biden are at the very least headed in the right direction with their recognition of gay couples. It’s going to take time for gay marriage to develope and become legal in this country, but I for one am not going to halt my vote for the Obama Biden ticket based upon on this one issue. I am choosing Obama and Biden because of their stand on many other issues from jobs, health care, fuel alternatives, etc.
If Alaska governor was a surprise, Biden was the steady voice.
-Steve had a busy Thursday morning … when he was up early and headed into the big city for a 7:00 a.m. dental appointment – prior to going into his office.
The one good thing is now he has his dental work taken care of and he can move forward knowing that he needs only annual check up and cleanings – with no other problems facing him.
-According to a study released Wednesday by the University of Arizona in Tucson. researchers now believe the virus which causes AIDS has been around since about 1900. The genetic analysis of a biopsy sample recently uncovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has convinced biologist Michael Worobey that the virus has been in existence for over 100 years, which is about 30 years earlier than previously thought.
-The volume was pumped up considerably Thursday night at the start of Game 2 of this National League Division Series at Wrigley Field, after Wednesday’s crowd sat on its hands most of the night.
Carlos Zambrano and the infield defense fell apart during a five-run second inning of an 10-3 loss to the Dodgers, putting the Cubs in a 2-0 hole as the series heads to Los Angeles for Saturday night’s Game 3.
I didn’t say much to Steve, who has been a Cubs fan since he and his grand father watched the Cubs in Steve’s early days of life.
The was no magic for the Cubs at Wrigley last night.
-Yesterday around 3:30 p.m. I had to give my cousin a ride out to the country north of Duluth to get her truck. She found these guys who would change out the rear end in her truck plus do breaks for around $900, compared to the automobile dealership garage that wanted about $2,500 for the same job. So I gave her a ride in my car – and oh my gosh were the leaves beautiful outside Duluth on the Howard Gnesen Road. They were so vibrant and bright – it was just a beautiful ride as the sun hit those leaves squarely on.
Fall is definitely here and God’s beauty was shining through.
-Something new is being added this morning … it’s the Friday Morning Man post. Each Friday we will post a photo of a guy … who will be know as our Friday Morning Man.
-That is it guys … I’m going to finish up my yogurt, read some news and wait for Steve to get up and then get out of the bathroom from showering and shaving. Then it will be my turn.
Have an enjoyable Friday … where ever you may be and what ever you may be doing. Remember to smile and make the most of your day. I am a firm believer that the way we meet and greet the day, has a lot to do with how our day will go.
So be cheerful … even when something has you down, but that sad face into a smile – and you’ll have a great day.
Be kind and we’ll see you back here again tomorrow morning.
-Until next time…
