Frosty Conditions

Saturday, October 4, 2008 Steve and Warren 2 comments

-Hello everyone and welcome to our Saturday edition of the blog.

-It is clear and darn cold outside in the back yard this morning. We currently have 28 degrees or 4 degrees below freezing.

This is definitely the coldest morning of our fall season so far.

-The weatherman is predicting: Partly cloudy. Highs 52 to 57. Light winds becoming southeast 5 to 10 mph by afternoon.

Color weather radar indicates clear skies across all of Minnesota this morning.

-As we have been mentioning the past few days … October is GLBT history month, and on this date in history here is what happened:

October 4

October 4, 1913 – E.M. Forster finished writing his novel “Maurice” which is about a man coming to terms with his homosexuality. It would not be published until 1971, after Forster’s death, at the request of the author.

October 4, 1983 – AFL-CIO voted to support gay rights legislation.

October 4, 1985 – West Germany elected its first openly gay parliament member.

October 4, 1989 – Graham Chapman, co-founder of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, died of throat cancer at the age of 48. Chapman came out in his book “A Liar’s Autobiography.” He was survived by his lover of 23 years, David Sherlock, and John Tomiczek, who the couple adopted as a teenager in 1971.

-Steve had a busy busy day yesterday. It started off by me calling him around 11:00 a.m. for lunch. I told him I could be at his office by around 12:30 p.m. and we could go out. I arrived on time and we went out to the small Chinese cafe located close to the area where Steve’s office is located.

For a change I had Chinese veggies with shrimp, while Steve had seasame chicken. We both had rice, I however of late have not been eating the rice – simply because it is extra carbs and I don’t need them.

After lunch we drove to a local store where I picked up a couple of items that I needed for the house and Steve picked up a pair of bedroom slippers.

Sad thing is, when Steve got home he tried the slippers on without his socks – and there was some kind of lump smack in the middle of one of them – which cause discomfort – so they are going back to the store today.

-As I was eating my morning Kellogg’s raisin crunch, I realized that our society has got it all wrong when it comes to age, youth, and beauty.

Well, not that society’s view is “wrong” but it certainly is kind of destructive. The other day, I over heard a 45 year old woman talking about how she would be happy if she dropped from a size six to a size four – and that she was thinking of scheduling a chin-lift for herself.

I was in the Super One grocery store at the time and it struck me as sad that she had attached her body and self to youth. No matter how many operations on her body or face she gets, and time she spends at the hospital gym or exercise place, or money she spends on “thin” and “beauty” products, she is hurtling through her life toward death.

I think to resist the inevitable is futile. Instead of dreading the aging process, I think we should accept it and not dwell on it. It’s going to happen. It can happen with resistance, or it can happen with acceptance.

Now I’m not saying that we should let ourselves go.  We need to take care of that which God has given us.  Heavenly only knows that I could have done better with the body that God gave me.  I could have six pack abs, muscular developed chest, firm butt cheeks and muscular this and muscular that.

Even if our society doesn’t find sagging chin skin to be attractive, guys still can. Age can be just as attractive as youth. In fact, there are a lot more attractive qualities that come with age anyway.  The fact of the matter is that it is all the cycle of life – and no one part is better than the others. It’s all part of a greater whole. And it’s beautiful, and it should be loved.

So, in my retirement as I look in the mirror every single morning – I’m trying my best to enjoy every part of it…and that includes everything I see in the mirror.

Actually I’m looking pretty darn good looking for 62, but then I did look good back with I was 52, and for sure when I was 42 and way good at 32.  :-)

-They say what goes around comes around … Thirteen years to the day after being acquitted of killing his wife and her friend in Los Angeles, O.J. Simpson was found guilty of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room.

-Today Steve and I will make our usual trek back into the big city to do some shopping, see a movie and have our Saturday “lunper” (lunch and supper) meal.  That word was just made up…obviously.  Our trip will include a visit to the local Super Walmart for groceries – as we always do.

-Steve’s – Mr. Hotness – Jason Varitek and his team went up 2 to 0 on the Angels in baseball playoffs.

J.D. Drew thought several times in the past six weeks that his season might be over because of back problems.

Fortunately for the Boston Red Sox, he was wrong.

Drew stunned Francisco Rodriguez with a two-run homer in the ninth inning, and the Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-5 on Friday night for a 2-0 lead in their first-round AL playoff series.

As for the Chicago Cubs … Steve’s favorite team – well we just won’t talk about them for now.

-I think I’ll check out some more news here online here, finish up my cereal … grab a quick shower and get ready to meet the day. Here’s hoping that you have a great Saturday – where ever you may live.

The weather around the country looks pretty good, except for here and for some snow flakes in some of the western and more moutain states where there are snow flakes this morning – so get out and enjoy your day guys. It looks like it is going to be fairly warm around the nation – have fun.

Steve will be getting up around 8:00 a.m. or so – and today – we are going to enjoy life – together. You do the same.

-Until next time…
